Dfam uses a newly developed classification system for repetitive sequences that combines concepts from established systems and with phylogenies based on reverse transcriptase and transposases. Classification names have been chosen to be as descriptive as possible while still honoring the most widely used acronyms for well-defined classes. In this hierarchy class names may not be unique rather the concatenation of terms from the root of the system should be used to uniquely identify a classification.
