Classification within the Wicker et al. (2007) framework, sometimes known as the 80-80-80 framework, starts with the TE classes proposed by Finnegan (1989), based upon the type of nucleic acid (RNA or DNA) used as a transposition intermediate. Further classification is based on coding regions, structural features and sequence similarity. This framework as written is missing some more recently discovered elements present in the Repbase classification. Families within this framework constitute groups of elements which share high sequence similarity in their coding, internal core or terminal repeat regions. High similarity is defined as 80% or more sequence similarity in at least 80% of the aligned sequence, and only DNA segments of more than 80 bp.
